Do you work from home and do a lot of Zoom or Skype calls? You’ve probably realised that your own home lighting leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to video conferences - and first impressions count. Choosing the right type of lighting to flatter your features, suit your purpose and fit the space you have makes a huge difference to how you come across on your video calls.
The most flattering and even light for video conferencing is created with ring lights. These doughnut-shaped lights produce a soft light that smooths out harsh facial shadows and reduces the look of any lines and wrinkles. Some of them are compact enough to fit even the smallest of home offices and not get in your way.
If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry - we’re going to give you the lowdown on the best ring lighting for your home video conferencing, so you’ll look like a professional superstar every time (even if you are still wearing your pyjamas!)

Final Thoughts
We hope we’ve given you some food for thought with this list of ring lights for video conferencing, but here’s a few extra tips on how to get the best out of that next Zoom call:
- If your desk or work area is in front of a window where the sun hits your face directly, then try to move it or close your blinds. Direct sun makes you squint and will cause harsh shadows, and that’s not a good look for anyone!
- The best position for using a ring light is having it placed directly in front of you, with the light in line with your face. Don’t place the light too high or too low, as this can cause facial shadows.
- The angle of your camera will also have an effect on how good you look on your conference videos. If your camera is too low, then you will give everyone that dreaded “up-nostril” view. If it’s too high, then you run the risk of gaining a double chin when you look downwards. Adjust the height of your chair or workstation to ensure that your monitor is at eye level.
- Do you get that annoying glare from the light reflecting in your glasses during video calls? You can get rid of it by adjusting the angle of your light. For glasses-wearers, move your ring light up a bit and to the side of your face. Because it will give you shadows, you need to add a fill light on the opposite side of your face - this could be another light, or even a window.
